Obama Hails Auburn Football Team

By SEAN COLLINS WALSH

Football players from Auburn University?s N.C.A.A. championship team met President Obama at the White House on Wednesday afternoon.

Robert Gibbs, the president?s former press secretary, described by Mr. Obama as ?the biggest Auburn fan I?ve ever met,? returned to the White House for the event.

?Earlier this year when the team was making its run to the championship, Robert was insufferable,? Mr. Obama said.

Mr. Gibbs, a native of Auburn, Ala., and his son, Ethan, another big fan, was on hand for the White House event.

The team?s trip to Washington, which had been scheduled for earlier, was postponed after tornadoes swept through Alabama. One place devastated by the storms was Tuscaloosa, home of Auburn?s archrival, the University of Alabama.

Auburn players and fans drew public notice in May when they traveled to Tuscaloosa to help with the disaster relief effort. The president recognized their generosity on Wednesday.

?We?re all Americans first and foremost, and we?ve got an obligation to support each other in times of need,? Mr. Obama said.

The Auburn Tigers finished the season 14-0 after winning the BCS Championship 22-19 over the University of Oregon. The quarterback, Cam Newton, won the Heisman Trophy, college football?s highest honor, and was selected first in the recent N.F.L. draft by the Carolina Panthers.
