Al Hubbard Joins Pawlenty Team

Tim Pawlenty, the Republican presidential candidate and former governor of Minnesota, has taken on board another influential Republican, Al Hubbard.

The campaign said Mr. Hubbard, who led the National Economic Council under President George W. Bush, will chair ?policy efforts? for Mr. Pawlenty.

Mr. Hubbard?s decision is a victory for Mr. Pawlenty in the competition with Mitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, for support from Mr. Bush?s vast network of donors. A Romney spokesman did not immediately respond.

Both candidates are eagerly wooing Mr. Bush?s supporters. Many of the former president?s donors, including Mr. Hubbard, had indicated their support for Mitch Daniels, the governor of Indiana, who decided last month not to run.

?Al Hubbard not only has clout with the vast network of Governor Daniels? supporters, but also carries weight with policy makers and thought leaders nationally,? Mr. Pawlenty said in his campaign?s release.

On Tuesday, Rep. Joe Wilson, whose home state of South Carolina hosts an important primary, endorsed Mr. Pawlenty, and on Thursday, former Gov. Sonny Perdue of Georgia defected from Newt Gingrich?s campaign to work for Mr. Pawlenty.

An aide to Mr. Pawlenty said the added support could be an indication that Mr. Pawlenty is gaining favor within all parts of the Republican Party.

?Governor Pawlenty is in a unique position to be able to unite the conservative movement and the party,? said Alex Conant, a Pawlenty spokesman.
